Jim Machajewski: A Story of Experiences

Jim’s career as a design leader is rooted in a simple belief: technology should serve people, and the best digital experiences come from listening deeply to the humans using them. Over more than two decades, Jim has built a reputation as a thoughtful executive, strategist, and mentor who excels at translating complex technical systems into intuitive experiences, whether that involves scaling teams at Fortune 10 enterprises or driving product strategies in high-growth environments.

After starting his career during the early dot-com days, Jim established himself as a key design leader across several major milestones in tech and enterprise software. At Dell, as Director of User Experience (UX) Design, he managed a multidisciplinary organization responsible for high-stakes platforms. In 2016, he joined Amazon to build out its Austin UX Design Studio from scratch, growing the office from 3 to over 80, all while leading UX strategy for Amazon Business. He later brought that same zero-to-one builder mindset to Varis within the ODP Corporation, establishing the Design and UX operations for a novel B2B eCommerce platform, and subsequently served as Senior Director, Head of UX Design for Walmart Business.

Currently, Jim serves as the Sr. Vice President of Design and UX at Carnegie Learning, where he leads overall design strategy and user experience across the company’s curriculum. digital technologies, and platforms. Across both EdTech and commercial enterprise sectors, Jim’s leadership style remains steady and people-first, focused on connecting product vision directly to measurable outcomes.

Beyond his corporate executive roles, Jim is deeply committed to community leadership and education. He spent two years as an Adjunct Professor in the UX/UI Program at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business, where he mentored and graduated 74 design students. In his local community, he served as President and Executive Board Member of the Round Rock High School Dragon Band Boosters, overseeing non-profit operations, visual branding, and volunteer engagement. He also volunteers his time as a photographer and creative director for several local organizations. Known by peers for his steady perspective and inclusive approach, Jim continues to focus on what matters most: empowering organizations and companies of all sizes to build usable experiences that enrich people's lives.
